Interoperability is the ability of different blockchains to communicate — to exchange assets, data, and messages with each other instead of operating as isolated islands. Without it, value on one chain is stuck there; with it, an asset or an instruction can move to wherever it's most useful.
Blockchains weren't designed to talk to each other: each has its own ledger, consensus rules, and address formats. Interoperability is the growing toolkit that connects them anyway.
How Blockchains Connect
Bridges: lock an asset on one chain and issue a representation of it on another, or burn-and-mint between chains.
Cross-chain messaging protocols: let a contract on one chain trigger actions on another — the plumbing behind many multi-chain apps.
Shared standards: common virtual machines (like the EVM) and token standards let code and tooling work across chains.
Atomic swaps: trustless trades directly between two chains, with cryptography guaranteeing both sides settle or neither does.
Why It Matters — and What to Watch
Interoperability decides whether crypto becomes one connected economy or a set of walled gardens. It also concentrates risk: bridges hold large pools of locked assets and have been among the most-exploited pieces of infrastructure in crypto. Before moving assets across chains, understand who or what secures the bridge you're trusting.
