A recovery phrase is a list of 12–24 words that backs up your crypto wallet; anyone with it can restore the wallet and access the funds, so it must be kept secret and offline. It is also known as a seed phrase or mnemonic.
What Is a Recovery Phrase?
A recovery phrase is a sequence of 12 to 24 simple words that serves as the master backup for a self-custody crypto wallet. It's generated when you first create a wallet, and it can be used to restore your wallet — and all the funds in it — on any compatible device.
It's also called a seed phrase or mnemonic phrase; the terms are interchangeable. Whoever holds the recovery phrase controls the wallet, which is why protecting it is the single most important rule in self-custody.
How Does a Recovery Phrase Work?
When you create a wallet, it generates a random recovery phrase.
The phrase is mathematically used to derive all your private keys and addresses.
You write it down and store it securely offline.
If your device is lost, stolen, or broken, you enter the phrase into a compatible wallet to restore full access.
Anyone who obtains the phrase can do the same — so it must stay secret.

Recovery Phrase, Seed Phrase, Mnemonic — What's the Difference?
These are three names for the same thing. "Seed phrase" emphasizes that it seeds your keys, "mnemonic" is the technical term for the word-list format (defined by the BIP-39 standard), and "recovery phrase" emphasizes its role in restoring a wallet. All refer to the same secret words.
What Happens If You Lose It?
If you lose your recovery phrase and lose access to your device, your funds are likely gone for good — there is no central company that can reset it for you. This is the trade-off of self-custody: complete control comes with complete responsibility for your backup.
